Are you enjoying our centenary year?
We are a quarter of the way through our centenary year and we have been delighted to share some truly brilliant highlights with you, the community of Hertfordshire.
We have welcomed the Poet Laureate to Letchworth Library, been amused by Robin Ince, been wowed by theatre for babies with A Tale of Us and been entertained by a variety of authors including T. M. Logan, John Connolly and S. J. Bennett.
This is just the beginning! Read on to discover what is still to come and how you can join the celebrations.
Our Big Birthday Weekend!
Visit your local library on Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 June to join our Big Birthday Weekend celebrations. Libraries across the county will mark the occasion with a variety of fun activities including Centenary Baby Rhyme Times and Storytimes, interactive colouring sessions, poetry workshops and even a silent disco!
Many activities are taking place during your local library's regular opening hours but some activities require pre-booking.
Visit our webpage for details of events.
There’s something for everyone, so come along and be part of the celebration!

Poetry Festival
Our 100-word poetry challenge is in full swing, and we have some great prizes for the winning poets, including a family ticket to Warner Bros. Studio Tour for a child’s poem and a bottle of Poet Laureate sherry for a winning adult poet. Your poem, inspired by libraries, reading or creativity should be submitted by 21 June 2025.
To submit a poem - it can be written, recorded or filmed - you can use the online form or simply hand in your poem to staff at your local library.
We look forward to receiving them.
Reminisce with us…
Have you seen our Through the Decades short film which celebrates 100 years of Hertfordshire Libraries? Alongside screenings which will be taking place in our libraries, there will be other opportunities to reminisce, including memories events and family time capsule activities. Why not pop into your local library to leave a memory in our centenary scrapbooks?
Visit our webpage to view the film online.
Do you have a special memory of visiting the library you would like to share with us?
This centenary year is all about our community and we would love to hear from you! We'll be filming and interviewing library visitors throughout the year. The next opportunity to get involved will be on Monday 23 June 2025 at Stevenage Library as part of our ‘In conversation with Jasper Fforde’ event.
Please email [email protected] for more information and to share your memories.
Counting in photos!
We have set ourselves the ambitious target of trying to photograph library users of all ages from 0 to 100 to show our libraries really are for everyone this centenary year!
If you see us out and about taking photos of people with colourful numbers, please volunteer to join in!
