A press release from North Herts District Council...
The River Hiz running through the centre of Hitchin has been drained, cleared of silt and debris, and refilled last week as part of its annual maintenance programme.
Using a sluice-gated balancing tank system, the river was drained to allow clearance of built-up silt, sludge, and litter. The river was successfully refilled on Friday 23 January, restoring its vibrant appearance and healthy ecosystem.
Highlights from this year’s clean-up:
- 5 tanker loads removed, totalling 63,000 litres
- Around 25 tonnes of solids cleared, including silt, leaves, sticks, stones, and general rubbish thrown into the river
Why it matters:
- It ensures unimpeded river flow via the balancing tank system
- It improves the visual appeal of central Hitchin
- It supports improved wildlife habitat, especially for ducks, birds, and aquatic life
