A new community craft project has just begun in North Herts, introducing Captain Rainbow — a handmade, rainbow‑themed character created to bring colour, kindness and creativity into local spaces.
The project was started by Katie, a local resident who openly admits she’s not a knitter herself. That honesty is part of the charm. Captain Rainbow began as a simple idea: a colourful, friendly character that anyone could make, regardless of skill level. Katie wanted to create something positive and community‑minded.
Because this is a brand‑new project, everything is still taking shape — including the pattern. Katie is sharing it freely, but she’s also clear that it may need tweaks or improvements. Makers are encouraged to give feedback, suggest changes, or help refine the instructions as the project grows. It’s a collaborative, low‑pressure way for the community to build something together.
The idea is for people to knit, crochet or craft their own version of Captain Rainbow and place them in local spaces such as libraries, churches, community centres and family hubs across Stevenage, Hitchin and the wider North Herts area.
Every Captain Rainbow will look a little different, and that individuality is part of the charm.
Whether you’re part of a craft group, looking for a fun project to do with children, or simply enjoy making things, you’re welcome to join in. Beginners are especially encouraged — if the project’s creator isn’t a knitter, you don’t need to be either.
