A message from North Herts District Council...
Swimmers in North Herts will be able to enjoy the district’s two heated outdoor pools for longer this year, after both Hitchin and Letchworth lidos confirmed extended opening dates.
The popular venues, managed by Everyone Active in partnership with North Herts Council, were due to close on Sunday, September 7.
However, planned decarbonisation works across the district’s leisure centres mean the lidos will remain open later than usual, ensuring more people still have the opportunity to swim while other facilities undergo improvements.
Both sites have already enjoyed a hugely successful summer season, with tens of thousands of visits recorded.
The lido at Hitchin Swimming and Fitness Centre, which welcomed 27,901 visits this summer, will remain open until Friday, October 31, offering swimmers the chance to enjoy outdoor exercise deep into the autumn months.
Earlier in the summer, Hitchin also trialled a short two-week cold water swimming pilot in May, which proved popular with the community.
The sessions proved highly popular, and operators are now exploring the possibility of starting them even earlier next year.
From mid-May onwards, and throughout the extended season, the pool has been and will continue to be fully heated.
Letchworth Lido, which marked its 90th anniversary in July and attracted 46,678 visits this summer, will continue operating until Tuesday, September 30. The site will then prepare for its seasonal transformation into a festive ice rink, which reopens in late November and runs through to January.
Last year, the rink drew thousands of visitors and featured new inclusive sessions for people with additional needs, seniors, and under-5s.

“By extending the seasons, we can give even more residents and visitors the chance to experience our heated lidos, whether that’s through lane swims, family sessions or simply enjoying the unique atmosphere of outdoor swimming. Letchworth’s winter ice rink also means the community can enjoy this unique space year-round.”
Cllr Amy Allen, North Herts Council’s Executive Member for Environment, said: "We’re delighted to be extending the season at both Letchworth and Hitchin lidos this year. With the pools being heated, it’s a great opportunity for residents to enjoy some outdoor swimming before the end of the season, and a perfect way to make the most of the late-summer sunshine.”
