Crossroads Caring for Life Charity- Working Together for a more Inclusive Hitchin

Published:

One in two of us will be affected by dementia in our lifetime either by caring for someone living with dementia or developing dementia ourselves : Alzheimers Research UK

Hitchin is taking strides towards becoming a dementia & Age-friendly inclusive community with the launch of an ambitious project aimed at raising awareness and understanding of dementia. Crossroads Caring for Life is working alongside Memory Support Herts & other local organisations to make a lasting impact on the town.

Part of this effort is the installation of a Dementia Awareness Bench, representing the town’s commitment to inclusivity while providing a practical resting spot. Donations from local Hitchin councillors and others organisations have raised £800, but we need £400 more to reach the £1,200 goal for installation and decoration of the bench.

The larger project includes a strong community engagement initiative. Crossroads will be distributing leaflets to local businesses, highlighting key points on how they can choose to become more involved in the project and the benefits of doing so. The leaflets will highlight the importance of creating a dementia-friendly environment and the positive impact it can have on both individuals living with dementia and the community as a whole. Businesses that actively participate in the project and implement dementia-friendly practices will be eligible for future accreditation, demonstrating their commitment to supporting individuals with dementia and fostering empathy within the community. This accreditation will not only enhance their reputation but also attract customers who value socially responsible businesses. Simple changes can make a difference. For example, train staff to be patient and helpful, take extra time at the checkout or simply being kind and understanding if someone seems confused.

For carers, a weekly café meets Fridays 10am – 12 pm at Church House, supported by Tilehouse Street Rotary Club Hitchin, Whitwell Primary Care Network and Crossroads Caring for Life.
