To tie in with Visit England’s Year of Literary Heroes, the award winning Education Centre at St Albans Cathedral has designed a series of literary themed events with our younger visitors in mind.  Our August Family Discovery Mornings for children aged 3 to 11 promise arts and crafts, storytelling, face painting and trails around the Cathedral.  These free events will be held on Thursday mornings throughout August and with no need to book, you can simply drop in anytime between 10am and 12.30pm.

Our first Family Discovery Morning will be on Thursday 3rd August and will be looking at ‘Animals around the Cathedral’ to mark 30 years since the publication of Dick King Smith’s children’s classic The Hodgeheg. During the course of the morning the children will be able to explore all the animals around the Cathedral and make their very own animal mask to take home with them.

On Thursday 10th August we will be celebrating 20 years of everyone’s favourite boy wizard, Harry Potter with our ‘A Magical Morning’ themed event.  Our third event will allow your little ones to hone their detective skills as we mark 125 years since the first Sherlock Holmes book was published.  Activities will include searching for clues on our detective trail and learning how to take fingerprints.

This year’s summer holiday programme will conclude with a true journey of discovery as we mark the 350th anniversary of Jonathon Swift’s Gulliver’s Travels.  There will be tales and trails and the chance to make a collage of the giant from the land of Brobdingnag.

The Cathedral’s Education Officer, Steve Clarke said “Our range of summer holiday activities allow children the chance to explore and learn about both classic children’s story characters as well as famous historical figures connected with St Albans.
