National Walking Month

Published:

Did you know that May is National Walking Month!?

To mark the occassion we thought we would share some of our favourite places to walk with children locally.

Hertfordshire is beautiful theres no doubt about that! When it comes to places to walk we are spoilt for choice!

Panshanger (keep an eye out for the fairy doors!) - a really decent walk with the kids with several different options. You can spot livestock, visit the little nature area and soak up the scenary.

Hartham Common - Obviously everyone in Hertford knows Hartham Common, aside from the very popular play area there are wildlife-rich river corridors, cattle-grazed meadows, and a network of paths and various recreational facilities.

Broxbourne Sculpture Trail - We love love love this one! You can read more about this one in our Tried and Tested here.

Cedars Park - steeped in history, the park was once the site of Theobalds Palace, a favoured residence of James I. Queen Elizabeth I also visited Theobalds many times during her reign. The park has woodland walks, formal gardens, play maze, ponds, play trail and even a little zoo. The park covers over 7.5 hectares and thanks to recent redevelopments paths are suitable for buggies, bikes, scooters and wheelchairs.

Hatfield Forest -Hatfield Forest is a managed landscape, which has been created by centuries of human intervention. It is home to over 3,500 species of wildlife, some of which are rare and threatened. The ancient trees, some over 1000 years old, provide the perfect habitat for some of the Forest's minibeasts. Whether you want somewhere for the children to run off energy or a place for quiet reflection Hatfield forest is a great place a walk.

Ashridge estate -Ashridge Estate is a 2,000 hectare (5,000 acres) area of the Chiltern Hills .Miles of footpaths and bridleways give you plenty of space to explore.

Stanborough Park- Stanborough Park is a beautiful countryside park, with 2 lakes covering an area of 126 acres, on the outskirts of Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire.  Take a gentle stroll, picnic or just laze away an afternoon relaxing in the award winning parklands.

How to encourage reluctant walkers

"We're bored" sometimes it can be a struggle to encourage the little ones to walk as for some it can be dubbed as "boring" particularly with tweens and teens! We've some top tips to make a walk a little more appealing for those who are opposed to the great ourdoors.

  • Geocaching - download this free app and turn your local walks into a real life treasure hunt that is enjoyable for any age.
  • Pokemon Go - catch pokemon whilst enjoying a local walk
  • Consider purchasing a special trail such as Treasure Trails Uk or Text Trails.

You can read our review of Treasure Trails uk here.

Incorporate a play trail into your walk such as the below...

Slightly further afield

The below are all slightly further afield but can be great to encourage walking in little people, as they walk and explore a lovely play trail. Click each link for more information.
