Do you want to learn more about bats and other nocturnal wildlife?
Head into Heartwood Forest on this family-friendly guided walk led by a bat expert, using bat detectors to pick up their calls.
A variety of bat species call Heartwood Forest home. We'll have plenty of stops along the way to search for bats and other nocturnal wildlife - come and see what you can find!
This is a free event but booking in advance is essential.
Children under 16 must be accompanied by a parent or a guardian.

Our open days are a great way of showing off to the public what our club is all about. It provides us with a chance to run the railway as it was originally intended, while providing the public with a chance to see a great variety of rolling stock (O gauge circuit) & live steam narrow gauge (16 mm).
Our site can be accessed off the Highfield Oval, Ambrose Lane, Harpenden. There is some parking for those travelling by car.
Please note that the site itself is reached by an unpaved path, which can be muddy during wet conditions.

Come and visit the largest preserved Midland Railway signal box in the UK and one of the few preserved boxes that's open to the public and next to a busy main line railway.
Signalling demonstrations are run on the operating floor upstairs whenever asked for. Railway videos and a slideshow of the restoration are shown downstairs, with many signalling items on display, including single line 'tablet token' machines, and other railway-related exhibits.
In the garden visitors can operate working signals and a point; on display are old signs, lit oil lamps, a telegraph 'pole route' and a garden railway.

Come and visit the largest preserved Midland Railway signal box in the UK and one of the few preserved boxes that's open to the public and next to a busy main line railway.
Signalling demonstrations are run on the operating floor upstairs whenever asked for. Railway videos and a slideshow of the restoration are shown downstairs, with many signalling items on display, including single line 'tablet token' machines, and other railway-related exhibits.
In the garden visitors can operate working signals and a point; on display are old signs, lit oil lamps, a telegraph 'pole route' and a garden railway.

Come and take an in depth look at the different habitats and wildlife of our King's Meads reserve, a wetland oasis in an urban area. With the Lottery funded Majesty of the Meads project coming to an end this year, find out what work we've done to improve the site and what we hope to do into the future to continue to provide sanctuary for wildlife.
Suitable for adults and children ages 10 plus.
Please note this walk is 1 - 1.5 miles and the terrain is uneven. Areas can be slippery after rain. Some parts of the reserve are quite steep and might be difficult for those with restricted mobility.
