If you’re in the mood for a proper Christmas pantomime, the Alban Arena’s production of Aladdin is just the ticket. We were delighted to be invited along to the press night, and from the moment the curtain goes up, it’s clear this is built to be a real crowd-pleaser: outrageous jokes, audience cries of “He’s behind you!” and “Oh no he isn’t!”, and the traditional booing of the villain and cheering for the legendary Bob Goulding as Dame Dolly!
But beyond all of this, the show delivers visually - lavish sets, dazzling costumes, and a cast that clearly knows how to bring sparkle and fun. Among them, former EastEnders star Steve McFadden (AKA Phil Mitchell) takes on the role of the baddie Abanazar and rocks the Arena with his version of ‘I Predict a Riot!’. The comedy continues with Damian Patton as PC World and comedian Dave Bibby as Charlie - both bring lively energy and comic timing that keep the fun rolling throughout.
Playing Aladdin is Iverson Yabut, making his panto debut, alongside Emily Tang as Princess Jasmine - together they add warmth and charm to the magical adventure. But perhaps the most show-stopping presence belongs to Rosanna Harris as the Spirit of the Ring. She delivers one of the evening’s standout moments: a duet of “Defying Gravity” - sung as Aladdin rides his magic carpet. And of course, let’s not forget the very charismatic Mr G the genie played by Jamal Kane Crawford - one for the mums!
