How to make a Pumpkin Pinata

This pumpkin pinata will feature in our Halloween at Home blog but as we are in for a weekend of wet weather i thought i'd share it with you now as a project you can maybe get started on .

You will need

  • A balloon
  • Tape
  • Paper (ideally white and orange but newspaper and orange paint is also fine)
  • String
  • PVA Glue or Flour
  • A pot to mix in
  • Toilet roll tube
  • Some kind of messy mat (its messy).

Step 1:

Blow up the balloon and add tape to shape it into more of a pumpkin shape.

Step 2:

Cut a toilet roll shape to size ( use picture as a guide) this will make your pumpkin stalk and also where you can add sweets once finished.

Step 3:

Apply paper mache, either use a 50:50 mix of PVA and warm water (stir to mix) or a 50:50 mix of flour to water. If you keep it in a sealable container you wont need to keep remaking the mixture. Cut of tear white paper or newspaper into rough shapes and apply directly to the balloon. Do this one layer at a time and allow to dry throughly between each layer.

You will need approx 5 layers. On the final layer add orange paper to the balloon and wrap string tightly around the stalk.

Step 4:

Once dry pop the balloon (use a knife or stick- adult supervision require)

Step 5:

Admire your handy work.

Optional step 6:

Add battery operated fairy lights to enjoy your pumpkin in the run up to Halloween.

Step 7: Remove fairy lights and add sweets then wrap some string around the stalk and hang up high and take turns to whack it until the sweets are free!

Enjoy!
