Special Olympics Sessions

Age: 8 - Adult

Special Olympics St Albans (SOSA) provides sporting opportunities for those aged 8 years and over with a learning disability. They use sport as a vehicle to empower their members to enhance their health and wellbeing, develop as individuals, establish friendships and feel equal and valued The project provides year-round weekly sport sessions for athletes aged 8yrs+, in a wide range of sports including Athletics, Swimming, Equestrian and Boccia. SOSA also work with a number of partners to provide additional satellite sessions, such as Rugby, Judo, Golf, Football and Trampolining. In addition to the sessions, members are also able to compete at local, regional or national competitions or get involved in volunteering and coaching opportunities.

Currently we have more than 800 players (boys, girls and disability) registered in around 80 teams with an age range of 7 - 18 years (up to 25 years for Disability teams). We also provide coaching, skill practice and football fun for, at the last count, 150 youngsters under 7. This is provided every Saturday and during school holidays.

Woodcraft Folk is a national charity run by volunteers. Young people develop their self-confidence & awareness of the world through our group nights, residentials & camps, where we use outdoor activities, crafts, songs & games to promote big ideas like sustainability & democracy. Groups meet in St Albans on Thurs/Fri eves: elfins (age 6-9), pioneers (10-12), venturers (13-15) and DFs (16+) . We ask for termly donations to cover costs.

We cater for school years 1-11. We realise most youngsters would like to try hockey out before committing, so we allow up to 4 sessions for a youngster to decide whether to become a member. No initial payment required. Sticks are lent to newcomers. In all cases every parent/guardian must submit a completed Membership Application form (on website)for the first visit. Parents/guardians of Under 9s must stay.
