Discover the atmospheric ruins of Old St Lawrence Church, tucked away in the peaceful Hertfordshire village of Ayot St Lawrence. Dating back to the 12th century, the Grade II*-listed church was partially demolished in the 18th century when a new parish church was built nearby. Its remaining flint walls, historic tombs and tranquil churchyard make it an intriguing place for children and adults to explore.

The church can form part of a lovely family outing around the village. Take a short stroll through Ayot St Lawrence to see the striking Palladian-style New St Lawrence Church, or extend your visit with a trip to Shaw's Corner, the former home of playwright George Bernard Shaw. Tours of the house generally need to be booked in advance, so check the National Trust website before travelling.

For a longer countryside adventure, follow one of the public footpaths around Ayot St Lawrence—the local short circular walk is approximately 1.6 miles. Finish with lunch or refreshments at The Brocket Arms, a characterful historic country inn close to the old church. Check current food-service hours and book a table before setting off.
