Cycling and Walking Paths

There are several walking and cycling paths in and around Harpenden including part of the National Cycle Network which has recently been resurfaced and extended. This will take you all the way to Luton (although be aware that there is a road to cross at East Hyde) and out to the opposite direction of Wheathampstead and beyond. Cycling the Nickey Line

If you fancy a stroll away from the town towards Redbourn the Nickey Line gives you nearly 9 miles of rural paths to run, cycle or walk the dog and children. It is great for beginner or nervous cyclists to avoid the roads. You can join at the new ramp entrance by Highfield Oval on Ambrose Lane or further on near Roundwood Park School on Park Hill. If you're feeling ambitious you can cycle all the way to Hemel Hempstead, but you can take some of the cut-off paths that will bring you into the back of Rothamstead Park. more...

Green Spaces along the High Street

Bowers Parade Sensory Garden situated in the town centre was provided to give residents and visitors, especially those with physical disabilities, the opportunity to touch, smell and see all the plants in detail. Harpenden Common & Southdown Ponds

Harpenden Common stretches for nearly 2 miles south of the town centre and is a designated County Wildlife site. You can feed the ducks at Southdown Ponds (you can buy a bag of duck food from the Town Information Point in Park Hall) and then picnic in Hay Field before running the children up and down the old clay mines in Brickle Dells and St. John's Wood otherwise known as the "ups and downs"! Geocaching is a free real-world outdoor treasure hunt. Players try to locate hidden containers, called geocaches, using a smartphone or GPS and can then share their experiences online. Highfield Oval

Highfield Oval is a 47 acre site off Ambrose Lane belonging to the charity, Youth With A Mission. It is open to the public (8am-8pm, Mon-Sat and 8am-1pm on Sundays) for walking in the woodland (spectacular in spring with bluebells),using the playing fields and visiting the popular Oval Cafe (open 9-5 Mon-Fri and Sat 10-4).
