Speaking Works

Small, fun speech and drama classes without the jazz hands. That is the quickest way to describe our Speaking Works classes for children from 5yrs up. For big or small voices, children build confidence in speaking and learn vital techniques for communicating. These are your elocution lessons of the past but revamped, providing teaching on all the fundamentals of speaking with fun and games thrown in!

Children learn and gain confidence working from page to stage with acting or creating speeches and talks for public speaking. Learning takes place through drama and play in a supportive, fun environment. The option is  also given to prepare for LAMDA (London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art) examinations in both Communication and Performance. Our after school term time classes differ to stage schools by being notably small, allowing for individual attention and focusing on general communication skills, not just acting technique.

“I really enjoy speaking works because it’s a blend of two things, it’s enjoyable but it’s also a challenging test of your skills” - Lewis, Yr 9

We are also running extra day time classes at the moment to give structure, an opportunity to learn new skills and essential social interaction for children not able to currently attend school.

Typical classes see 3-8yr olds making up stories and acting them out; while 8-12 year olds read poems, tackle speaking topics and perform improvisations. Older students rehearse monologues, poems and speeches to prepare for their LAMDA exams.

“My daughter really enjoys the Speaking Works classes. Her confidence in speaking in front of an audience has already improved and I’m pleased that she’s keen to do the LAMDA exams. Thanks for all you’ve done with the children this year.” - Claire L, St Albans
