Pick of the Month - June 2019

Published:

June is bustin’ out all over” so says the song, and that’s certainly true when it comes to what’s on in the area this month!

Take the family down to Harpenden Common on Saturday 8th June for the Harpenden Carnival.  With stalls, activities, music on the live stage and entertainment in the main arena there’s something for everyone.  And this year the fun extends into the town centre with activities and entertainment Church Green and Bowers Parade too!

The Oval’s annual Summer Fun Day and Dog Show takes place on 22nd June.  The day starts with the Fun Run and 5-mile run, before the Dog Show and other activities, and ends with a BBQ.

After the success of 2018 the Cultivate Festival returns with music, art, photography, activities and workshops at churches and other venues across Harpenden, 23rd -30th June.

Larks in the Park at Batford Springs takes place on 30th June with a Roman theme in keeping with the St Albans Roman Festival (more about that later).  As well as entertainment and music there will be donkey rides, the duck race, the Largest Mega Slide in Hertfordshire and mini golf!

With the exception of one or two events in the Cultivate Festival all of these community Festivals have free entry as does Open Farm Sunday at Luton Hoo Estate on Sunday 9th June where you can see demonstrations of a working farm and join in farm-related activities.

In Wheathampstead there’s a brand new Children’s Book Festival taking place at St Albans High School Prep on 15th June and with David Baddiel, Robin Stevens, Simon Pegg, James Mayhew and Jonathan Stroud all attending this is definitely one for young book lovers!

Over in St Albans the annual Alban Pilgrimage on 22nd June and Alban Street Festival on 23rd June tie in with the new St Albans Roman Festival taking place from 21st – 30th June, which aims to celebrate the history of the city. Other family-friendly events include: an afternoon of Roman-themed entertainment in The Alban Fest; Roman arts & crafts all day in the Cathedral on 21st June; Roman dressing-up at St Albans Clock Tower on 22nd & 23rd June; an Open Day at Verulamium Museum on 29th June;
making mosaic masks at Trestle Arts Base on 29th June; and Emperor and Empress Fun Day at Inn on the Park on 23rd June.

The St Albans Film Festival is back for it’s 6th year with over 50 films for all ages showing at venues across St Albans, including parent & toddler screenings, a teenage special and the outdoor cinema in the grounds of St Albans Cathedral.

The arrival of summer also makes it the perfect time to enjoy some open-air theatre.  If you like a bit of Shakespeare then you can enjoy A Midsummer Night’s Dream at Knebworth House in the Sunken Lawn, and The Tempest and Much Ado About Nothing at Chiltern Open Air Museum.  Or for something to appeal to younger audiences Shenley Walled Garden has performances of Gangsta Granny and Wind in the Willows.

And we mustn’t forget that June includes Father's Day!  Take a look at our What’s On page to find what’s going on that day, along with all the other events this month that we just didn’t have room for here!
