Pick of the Month - April 2018

April means Easter, and that means egg hunts and trails, so that’s what this month’s picks is dedicated to.  Let’s just hope we get suitable weather over the holidays for spending this much time outdoors!

Here in Harpenden, the Friends of Harpenden Academy Easter Egg Hunt on Harpenden Common has become an annual fixture and this year’s event is taking place on Friday 30th March.  Booking is required for this one, so get your tickets soon!

In St Albans the annual Wick Wood Easter Egg Hunt takes place on Saturday 31st March.  This is a drop-in event.  Also taking place the same day, you can drop into the Batchwood Easter Eggstravaganza.  This is a free event and amongst many other activities, such as crafts, bouncy castles and facepainting it will include a Woodland Easter egg trail. Later in the week, on the 4th April there will be an Easter Bunny Hunt at Highfield Park in St Albans.

Cadbury are once again sponsoring egg hunts at National Trust properties all around the country.  Locally you can find one at Dunstable Downs and at Ashridge Estate, both running 30th March – 2nd April. There is also and Victorian Bonnet Trail running the following week at Dunstable Downs.

Further afield you can also find Easter egg trails at Knebworth House on 30th & 31st March; Milton Keynes Museum 30th March – 2nd April, and Forest of Marston Vale 1st & 2nd April.  And some venues have branched out from the traditional egg hunt…Wrest Park have a dragon egg hunt as part of their Easter Adventure Quest running 30th March to 2nd April; Jordan’s Mill have an Easter Creature Hunt running from 2nd to 15th April and animals is also the theme for the RAF Museum London’s Easter Trail  31st March to 6th April. Please bear in mind that for some of these venues a general admission charge applies, please check the website for details.

Herts Libraries' annual LitFest also takes place this month with a range of events for children and adults taking place at librares across the county including Fun with Fiction on 9th April, stories and crafts with Lou Treleaven on 12th April at Harpenden Library - booking required for both of these events.

Later in the month it's Sustainable St Albans week (21st - 29th April) - a week of activities across the district focussing on the environment and sustainability.  Parents & toddlers can enjoy reusing water bottles to make shakers at Harpenden Library on 21st April and everyone can join in the After School Safari at Batford Springs on 23rd April.  Both of these events are free, but booking is required.  During the week, at the Oxfam Bookshop on Station Road, children can exchange books rather an buying new ones.  Up to 5 books can be swapped.  The week ends with the Know How Festival in Fleetville Junior School, St Albans - a day-long fun, family-friendly event - run by community groups and local businesses with workshops to share skills and knowledge.
