James Gilchrist & Anna Tilbrook: Winterreise
Benslow Music, Hitchin
Sat 3rd October 2026
7.30pm
Join tenor James Gilchrist and pianist Anna Tilbrook for a performance of Schubert's extraordinary Winterreise. Setting twenty-four poems by Wilhelm Müller that follow a solitary traveller's journey through a bleak winter landscape, the work explores themes of love, loss, memory, and resilience. By turns haunting, tender, and deeply moving, Winterreise remains a profound meditation on the human experience, brought vividly to life here by two of today's most distinguished interpreters of song.
The event begins with a talk from Dr Katy Hamilton, a noted specialist in 19th-century German song and familiar voice on BBC Radio 3, who will offer insights into Schubert's masterpiece and the rich musical world from which it emerged.

Halloween Storyboats
Frogmore Paper Mill Wharf
Fri 30th October 2026
1.30pm, 2.45pm & 4pm
Each school holiday we run Storyboats for younger children. This is a gentle 40 minute cruise down the River Gade to where it meets the Grand Union Canal, with wildlife spotting while listening to stories. The books we read a picture books, so the audience can spot the hidden elements and learn about new creatures. Suitable for ages 4 to 8 years, it is the ideal way to fill time between the more costly holiday outings. We feed the waterfowl we encounter and if we are very lucky we see the kingfisher.
We run special themed boats at Halloween and Christmas, with goody bags and an extra special passenger in a red suit at Christmas.
All children must be accompanied by an adult, all passengers must have a ticket. Tickets can be purchased from our website.

Tuesday 24th November
Insieme
Benslow Music, Hitchin
Tue 24th November 2026
7.30pm
Ensemble Insieme (Italian for together) present The Spark in the Quiet, a programme curated by recorder player Caoimhe de Paor and built from the moments when music calls her back to the recorder. Those times when a melancholic line from Dowland, a phrase by Bach, a flourish from Vivaldi, the warmth of an Irish Air, or the clarity of a modern piece lifts the instrument into her hands almost by instinct. These works, though from different centuries and traditions, share a quiet charge: a spark that lights up stillness and reminds her why she plays. Alongside voice, strings and piano, this recital follows that thread of gently rekindled inspiration, tracing how the recorders voice can move gently through time while always returning to the simple joy of breath, sound, and renewal.

Tuesday 22nd December
Santa Storyboats
Frogmore Paper Mill Wharf
Tue 22nd December 2026
2.30pm & 4pm
