Get ready to be transported back to the Roaring Twenties with 'The Drowsy Chaperone'! We are greeted in the present day by the narrator, feeling a little blue and putting on a favourite record to cheer up; the original cast recording of a fictional 1928 musical, The Drowsy Chaperone.
As the needle touches the record, Vale Musical Society catapults us from a humdrum kitchen into a play-within-a-play on Broadway. Crammed with Vaudevillian slapstick, this musical comedy follows the impending wedding of an oil tycoon hopelessly in love with a Broadway starlet who is willing to give up her career for marriage, much to the consternation of her harried producer. The engaged couple are surrounded by a bumbling best man, clueless wealthy hostess, ditzy wannabe starlet, Latin lothario, tipsy chaperone, goofy gangsters, and glamorous aviatrix, so there is something for everyone.
Throughout the show, the narrator interjects with encyclopaedic commentary on the musical we're watching and the fictional cast playing each character, until real life rudely interrupts the fun.
Why does 𝐝𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫 𝐌𝐢𝐤𝐞 𝐓𝐡𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐬𝐨𝐧 think you should come and see the funniest, award-winning show that you've never heard of? "𝑇ℎ𝑒 𝐷𝑟𝑜𝑤𝑠𝑦 𝐶ℎ𝑎𝑝𝑒𝑟𝑜𝑛𝑒 is a brilliant construct - a great comedy, in the middle of a glorious musical. You have to remember that we are on a journey through Man In Chair's mind, and we're seeing the show as he imagines it, as he's never even seen it. It's so meta!"
Winning 5 Tony awards on Broadway, it's one of musical theatre's best-kept secrets... until now.
𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐞𝐫 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐫𝐞𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐩𝐡𝐞𝐫, 𝐋𝐮𝐜𝐲 𝐄𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐬, says there's something for everyone: "Set in the Roaring Twenties, this show is dripping with glamour, crammed with Vaudevillian comedy and energised by Charleston dances, not to mention a spectacular tap routine."
Book now to see the fourth wall come crashing down in this hilarious show, playing at the Dembe Theatre, Tring, 6-10 May including a BSL signed performance on opening night.
