Great Fen Summer Sessions - Ponds Under the Microscope
Wildlife Trust Countryside Centre
Wed 17th August 2022
10.30am-12pm or 1.30-3pm
Join the experts from the Museum of Zoology, Cambridge, to investigate who lives in the pond, plus make a mini pond to take home!
We have an exciting session ahead with special guests from the University Museum of Zoology, Cambridge. First, we will go pond dipping together and record which species we find, from water beetles to damselfly larvae, pond snails to pond skaters and much more besides. We will then choose a variety of specimens to take inside to investigate under the microscope. Connected to the projector screen, this will be a fantastic opportunity to explore these animals in greater detail, before returning them safely to their watery home.
And finally, we will also be making bucket ponds for you to take home to support wildlife and increase the biodiversity in your garden. We will help you to create your own mini pond by supplying an upcycled bucket, oxygenating pond plant and flowering plants to attract insects. Bring along a shopping bag to take home rocks, which we will supply. These are used to build a little shelf inside your pond for your plants. At home you can insert your bucket into a large flower pot, build a reptile-friendly surround with rocks and or logs or bury your bucket into the ground!
Why not pack a picnic and enjoy lunch here before/after your session?
Please note, Ugg Mere Court Road is currently closed so please plan for diversions if this affects your route. You can only access our site on Chapel Road from Upwood/Bury direction. You can come past the road closed signs on Ramsey Road and Longholme Road in Upwood.
