VE Day Celebrations
This Friday it is 75 years since the end of World War 2. As befits such a special occasion lots of big events and streets parties were planned. However owing to lockdown unfortunately these have all been cancelled. But this doesn't mean we can't celebrate in our own way.
So with that in mind we have put together some ideas and suggestions which may help to make your VE Day party at home sparkle.
Decorations
So lets start with Decorations- use what ever you may have at home, have you got anything red white and blue lurking in the back of those cupboards? Lets embrace the Blitz spirit and reuse what we have. Theres also some great online resources which double up as an activity to get the kids involved in. Like this printable colouring in bunting with a spit fire here , Rainbow Bunting, Poppy Bunting and lots more via the Colouring Heros page.
Our very own Louisa from Mum's Guide to St Neots have also produced some colour in bunting for you here:
British Heritage also have some great downloadable decorations here.
If you are wanting to make some handheld Union Jack Flags you can do so here via the TWINKL Webpage .
If you are looking for union Flag colouring templates you can find them via the TWINKL Webpage .
TWINKL also have Union flag paper chains available to download here.
If you don't have a printer simply use paper and scissors and get the children to design their own.
If crafting isn't your thing Messages party shop in Hertford has some stock of VE day items and is doing deliveries and collections is you contact them.
Activities
Why not make a paper airplane using the spitfire template here and have a race with family to see whose can go furthest or fastest?
TWINKL is amazing for educational activities like this VE DAY RESOURCE PACK, which is free to download.
They also have a great wartime recipe book which would be great to get the little ones involved in some VE Day Baking. The 1940's Experiment also have some great recipes for you to try here:
The British Legion also have some amazing resources on their webpage.
Hertford town council are inviting people to share your bakes, or war time favourites using #HertfordVE75
There is a VE DAY LIVE Stream between 11:15 and 12:30 sharing stories and memories from those who served and sacrificed during the Second World War, as well as recognising the difficulties people are experiencing today which you can find the details of here.
Stay at home Street Party
Rope the neighbours in and celebrate with them (maintaining social distancing of course).
You can find the lyrics for the 9pm sing along here
If you'd like to order a take away to celebrate VE Day check out our range of local take aways here.
These are unprecedented times and I know many of you will be missing social interaction and the company of extended family and loved ones. But one day we will look back on all of this as just a memory and i believe we should where ever possible try and make as many memories as we can during this unique situation. Use the time to contact your loved ones in whatever means you have possible, letter, phone, email, video call.
Let us know how you will be celebrating and share your photos with us using the #mumsguidetohertford.
With lots of love
Kayleigh & The Boys
