Little Women at the Roman Outdoor Theatre

Published:

We were kindly invited to attend a performance of Little Women at the Roman Open Air Theatre Festival in St Albans this weekend, performed by OVO Theatre.  With this being my 15 year old daughter’s favourite book, we were both very excited at the prospect, and it didn’t disappoint!

It was a glorious sunny evening, and the setting within the Roman Outdoor Theatre was stunning.  Having personally never visited before, I was blown away and feel very lucky to have this hidden gem on our doorstep.

The performance was extremely high quality – both in terms of the acting and singing – and it really did deliver in terms of laughter, tears and lifting the spirit. The sun was just setting when we took a break for the interval, and I enjoyed a nice cold Pimms from the well-stocked bar in the beautiful surroundings.  Then we borrowed some blankets and cushions for the second half which kept us cosy as the sun went down so we could enjoy the performance to the max.

Here’s what my teenage daughter thought of the performance:

“Little Women, by Louisa May Alcott is originally a classic novel that reflects prevalent societal challenges that women have historically faced, many of which are still potent in today’s society.  I personally thought that OVO’s adaptation by Steph Allison, Amy Connery and Sophie Swithinbank, alongside the talented actors, brought out the themes of growing up and discovering what it means to be a woman in society perfectly.  I was amazed by the attention to detail in costume, physical theatre and through music, and it helped to create an emotive, inspiring performance that connected the audience to the well-loved characters, and even new ones!  I would recommend this to anyone of any age or gender, whether or not you have read or watched Little Women before because I can guarantee you will love both the performance and the atmosphere of the Roman Theatre.  It is sure to make you laugh, smile and possibly even cry at some point!”

With the weather looking dry and sunny this week, it is the perfect time to enjoy outdoor theatre.  We’d encourage anyone to go and see this amazing production.  It is suitable for all the family, and there are matinee and evening performances on until 14th August.  To book visit ovo.org.uk
