OUTSIDE BISHOP'S STORTFORD
Parndon Wood Nature Reserve, run by ECCO, is an area of ancient woodland home to a huge range of birds, small mammals, deer, flora and fungi. Opening hours Mondays: CLOSED Tuesday: CLOSED Wednesday: 11am-4pm Thursday: 2pm-9pm Friday: 11am-4pm Saturday: 11am-6pm Sunday: 11am-4pm Recorded as a woodland for over 900 years, Parndon Wood is composed of a canopy of oak with coppiced hornbeam growing beneath. The reserve is a Special Site for Scientific Interest (SSSI) due to its variety of flora and has received a Green Flag Award, which recognises the best parks in the country, for the last ten years. Visitors can follow the 1.5km trail, or simply explore the wood's many tracks and paths. There are three observation hides, where you can wait quietly for a glimpse of a green woodpecker or Muntjac deer. In the accessible Conservation Centre, learn about the local wildlife from the classroom full of woodland specimens, taxidermy and information posters. Children can hire bug hunting kits, have fun in the den building area, hire binoculars and complete seasonal spotter sheets. During school holidays, there are plenty of activity sessions for young people. Parndon Wood has informal visits by schools, which offer demonstrations of woodland crafts, painting and woodcarving, supporting national curriculum studies. Please note that dogs are welcome only in the café courtyard and must be kept on a lead at all times. Dogs are not allowed onto the woodland trail.

Our PYO is now open daily from 9.00am - 4.30pm We have had to put a number of restrictions in place for the PYO, which we hope you will understand and support. We are charging an entrance fee of £2.50 per adult/child (under 5s free). This fee will be refunded against a minimum spend on fruit picked of £2.50 per adult/child. There is a kiosk by the strawberry fields for entry and where payment for the PYO will then be taken on exit. Please respect social distancing rules and stay at least 2 metres away from other pickers and our staff who will be on site to make sure you know where to go and to monitor the picking. We will be limiting numbers of customers at any one time and will ask you to wait if necessary. We are looking forward, as much as you, to the carefree days of fruit picking, but for now our priority is keeping everyone safe. At the moment our PYO cannot operate as the usual fun family day out but it can still enable you to have access to the freshest fruit available.
